  • Two-day event in Costa Rica is to prepare for the UN Ocean Conference in France in 2025
  • Topics discussed included the capacity of the oceans to absorb carbon dioxide, the need for sustainable fishing and tackling marine pollution

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s climate envoy, Adel Al-Jubeir, on Saturday said the Kingdom is committed to cooperate with the international community in enhancing efforts to protect oceans and marine resources.

Al-Jubeir, who is also minister of state for foreign affairs and a member of the Council of Ministers, reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment in a speech at Ocean Action: Immersed in Change, a high-level event in the Costa Rican capital, San Jose, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The San Jose gathering of country representatives, scientists and international experts, is to prepare for the 3rd UN Ocean Conference, to be held in France in 2025. Participants debated issues including the capacity of the ocean to absorb carbon dioxide, the need for sustainable fishing and tackling marine pollution.

Al-Jubeir cited Saudi Arabia’s participation in international negotiations that resulted in a legally binding formula for an agreement on the sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas outside national areas.

The Kingdom also took an active part in negotiations aimed at coming up with a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution that includes the marine environment, SPA reported.

Al-Jubeir also noted that the Saudi Green Initiative, part of Saudi Vision 2030, has a commitment to protecting 30 percent of the Kingdom’s terrestrial and marine areas by 2030.

During Saudi Arabia’s presidency of the G20 in 2020, the Kingdom led international efforts by launching the global platform to accelerate research and development of coral reefs to complement international efforts to protect the marine environment, he said.

He further cited the Kingdom’s commitment to the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems in the Red Sea and its launch of the General Foundation for the Conservation of Coral Reefs and Turtles in the Red Sea.

“The Kingdom contributes effectively to regional efforts to protect and preserve the marine environment in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. It is also a member of the Regional Authority for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment,” Al-Jubeir said.

Earlier on Friday, Li Junhua, the UN undersecretary-general for social affairs, said at the start of the talks that protecting the ocean was “not an option but an imperative.”

Costa Rica’s President Rodrigo Chaves, host of the two-day meeting, said that if the world does not act, “we as a generation would be taking away the future of humanity.”

RIYADH: The “Ezz Al-Watan 3” celebration, held to mark Saudi Arabia’s 94th National Day, has been concluded by the Ministry of Interior.

The event, organized in collaboration with the General Entertainment Authority, featured musical performances, military parades, scholarly dialogues focusing on key historical events, and the exhibition at the King Saud University arena in Riyadh.

Discussions tackled the evolution of security in the Kingdom over the ages and strategic changes that have reinforced security and stability, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday.

The festivities also highlighted the ministry’s efforts and security system, as well as the services it provides to citizens, residents and visitors.

National Day holds a profound significance, with events honoring a grand historical legacy, brave sacrifices and the realization of a secure present in a thriving homeland.

On Monday, Riyadh witnessed spectacular aerial displays organized by the GEA in cooperation with various government and private entities. Crowds first watched an aircraft from the Directorate of Public Security carrying the Saudi flag.

Next came helicopter formations from the Ministry of the National Guard, then aircraft from the Royal Saudi Air Force under the Ministry of Defense and civilian airliners from Saudia Airlines and flyadeal.

The military craft formed the number 94 in the skies and the Saudi Hawks aerobatic team performed complex aerial formations to demonstrate the pilots’ skills.

They were followed by displays featuring Typhoon, F-15 SA, Tornado, and F-15 C aircraft in front of the showground.

Also participating in the air displays were the Royal Guard Presidency, the Presidency of State Security, the General Authority of Civil Aviation, Matarat Company, Saudi Air Navigation Services, the Saudi Aviation Club and the Saudi Broadcasting Authority.

  • Abdullah Al-Swaha underscores the Kingdom’s role in bridging social, economic, AI gaps

RIYADH: Saudi Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Al-Swaha, speaking at the Summit of the Future session titled “Toward a Common Digital Future,” said that the Kingdom, under the leadership of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, presents a model of international cooperation to bridge social, economic and artificial intelligence gaps.

Al-Swaha noted Saudi Arabia’s collaboration with the UN’s International Telecommunication Union to study ways to bridge the digital divide, as 2.6 billion people currently lack access to digital solutions, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday.

He highlighted the Kingdom’s launch of a virtual hospital, which serves as a pioneering healthcare model and has performed numerous specialized surgeries, including open-heart operations in various countries.

The Kingdom is proud of the growth of its digital economy, Al-Swaha said, and it has proposed the establishment of the Digital Cooperation Organization to bridge gaps and serve over 800 million people.

This can be done by providing digital platforms and a unified digital market to foster innovative and entrepreneurial models in healthcare, education, and business, thus improving efficiency and helping the digital economy grow, he added.

Through its membership in the AI Advisory Body, led by the UN secretary-general, Saudi Arabia is contributing to bridging social, economic and AI gaps, shaping the future of humanity and empowering individuals, said Al-Swaha.

The Kingdom, he added, presented seven recommendations, including establishing an independent international scientific committee focused on AI, launching a multi-government dialogue on AI governance involving stakeholders, creating a platform for sharing standards and experience related to AI, and building a global network for capacity development.

“To enhance joint efforts and exchange experience, the Kingdom is proud to announce its framework for AI governance in partnership with the UN, the establishment of the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics in partnership with UNESCO, and the launching of the AI Readiness Framework in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union,” the minister said.

“As we celebrate today the launch of the Pact for the Future, we must unite in recognizing that we have only one option: a comprehensive AI that empowers humanity and ensures that no one is left behind in keeping pace with the world.”
